
Police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead and a woman injured Saturday night. Des Moines police told KCCI that officers responded to calls of shots fired at 23rd Street and University Avenue on Saturday around 5:46 p.m. Dogtown District near Drake University. When officers arrived, they found a 35-year-old man on the sidewalk outside Rico’s Restaurant. CPR was being administered when first responders arrived at the scene, police said. Doctors quickly took control of the situation and brought the man to the hospital, where he died. According to police, the second person, a 29-year-old woman, was taken to a local hospital a short time later in a private car. He was treated and released from the hospital. Police said two firearms were recovered in connection with the shooting. One gun was found on the sidewalk. Police are still investigating. Police say they are investigating claims the shooting was an act of self-defense. Des Moines police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the area. This is Des Moines’ 17th homicide this year.
